Title Kumho wins contract for sole supply of tires to Auto GP World Series
Date 2012.03.06

▶ Appointed as official tire brand based on its globally-acknowledged technology
▶ Brand awareness to be raised through seven races in four continents

Kumho Tires, one of the world's leading tire manufacturers, announced today it has been named as an official tire supplier to 2012 Auto Grand Prix World Series (Auto GP), an international formula racing series.

The series' root is traced back to the Italian Formula 3000 series which began in 1999. The championship was rebranded for the 2010 season, with it adopting the current name. Tires and engine displacement were upgraded similar to F1 requirements. Cars of Auto GP use a 3.4-litre V8 unit capable of delivering 550 bhp.

In 2012, the championship circuit expanded from Europe to include stops in seven countries - Italy, Spain, Portugal, Hungary, Morocco, Brazil and the United States. In other words, it became a world series with a race in seven countries spanning four continents - Europe, North America, South America and Africa. The premier of this year will be held in Monza, Italy, known for its renowned F1 circuit, for three days from March 9.

Kumho Tires' selection as official tire supplier means its promotion to the upper-class motor sport and this is based on the company's technology earned through rounds of F3, where it has taken top spots. The company already developed prototype tires for F1 in 2007. Replacing former official supplier Michelin, Kumho Tires will make a debut in Auto GP, and this entrance is significant as it will be Kumho's test circuit for future promotion to F1.

"Kumho's validation of its technology exhibited through activities in global motor sports served a moment for proposals as the official supplier and we look forward to its continued success in the series with its accumulated experience and technology," said Auto GP series organizer Enzo Coloni.

"We are very excited that we have been appointed as an official tire supplier to Auto GP, a pre-stage to F1. We will make full use of this series in terms of our technology and brand as it is an optimal stage for us to showcase our technological competence," said Joo Kyung-tae, Marketing Director for Kumho Tires.

The F1 race has also been held in Korea since 2010, with awareness of motor sports rising. Not only motor sports professionals but also the general publics are paying close attention to the participation of domestic companies in technological dimensions.

Currently, Kumho Tires has a plan to join the F1 race when both finance and technology resources are properly secured. In the meantime, the company will continue participation in various motor sports taking place both at home and abroad, including Auto GP and F3 to raise its brand awareness and promote technologies as a potential candidate for F1's official supplier.

Meanwhile, Kumho Tires' technology has widely been recognized through its participation as official tire supplier to the F3 Euro Series, acknowledged as the best and most challenging Formula 3 series in the world, and the Masters F3 race.
